The world of fashion is a very competitive industry, but it is also one of the most rewarding and creative.
There are many ways of getting in to the industry. Whether it be through your local college or university or directly through an employer. But many designers have been self taught and made it to the top. Being able to understand the market and knowing the trends, is a fantastic start.
You don't need to go to college to learn to sew. With todays resources online you can learn the basics through to more complex techniques.
I myself was taught the basics of using a sewing machine by my mother who made wedding dresses for a living, she had no qualified training she was completley self taught.
When i left school i went onto study fashion design at college they showed us all the techniques we needed to become dressmakers, designers at a basic level, this would prepare us for degree level already this was looking at 5 years to get to level of design junior then you work up the ladder from there, but they stunted my creativity somewhat as they try to get you to be a commercial designer, which is fine for some but with loads of ideas rushing through your head you wanted them to allow the creativity to flow. Thats why i chose to continue my study in theatrical costume to give me an insite into a different angle on the construction of garments. i made some absolutley beautiful creations, and learnt valuble techniques. i now make wedding dresses myself for a living. I know there are people out there that have a natural talent for fashion and design but dont have the opportunity to go to college. Like i said today use your talents, search the web buy a sewing machine and practise, practise. to get recognized hire a local hall and put on a charity fashion show showcasing your designs, friends and family will make perfect models. take orders and away you go.
